Technical Specifications and Application of Spring Washers according to DIN 7980

The DIN 7980 standard, which regulates the production of square-section spring washers, has been officially withdrawn from active use. Nevertheless, components manufactured according to this regulation continue to be used in legacy engineering assemblies.

Technical Purpose and Scope of Application

According to DIN 7980 specifications, these spring elements are intended for securing threaded connections that use screws or bolts with a strength class lower than 8.8 (as per DIN ISO 898-1 classification). The primary function of the washer is to compensate for axial play and prevent self-loosening caused by material settlement or vibrational micro-displacements (as detailed in DIN 267-26). It is important to note that these products do not provide sufficient protection when subjected to significant transverse loads. Experts at EV Group China recommend using them exclusively in assemblies with short screws that operate primarily under axial tension.
