ASTM F3125 / F3125M Technical Regulation: High-Strength Fastener Standards
The ASTM F3125 / F3125M standard establishes comprehensive requirements for the chemical composition and physical-mechanical properties of quenched and tempered bolts made from carbon and alloy steels. The specification unifies requirements for both imperial and metric measurement systems, covering a wide range of structural connections.
This regulation is a consolidated document that replaced six outdated ASTM standards: A325, A325M, A490, A490M, F1852, and F2280. Classification and Technical Parameters:
- Strength Grade: determined based on the measurement system (imperial or SI).
- Material Type: determines the chemical basis of the raw material to ensure specified performance characteristics.
- Design Execution: includes heavy hex head bolts, as well as specialized “Twist-off” assemblies (Tension Control Bolts).
Technical Notes on Steel Types:
- Type 1 (1040 MPa / 150 ksi): alloy steels, including boron-added compositions.
- Type 3 (830 MPa / 120 ksi or 1040 MPa / 150 ksi): weathering steel for operation in aggressive environments.
- Type 1 (830 MPa / 120 ksi): carbon, carbon-boron, and alloy steels.
The terminology used in the specification complies with the international standard F1789.
