API 5B Specification: Threading and Quality Control Standards for Casing and Tubing

Technical requirements of the API 5B standard

This specification establishes strict industry standards for geometric parameters, tolerances, and marking methods for API threaded connections. The regulation defines acceptance criteria, technical specifications for measuring gauges, and quality control methods for casing, tubing, and line pipe connections, including buttress and round thread types.

EV Group China specialists emphasize that metrological control of threaded elements can be carried out directly during the production process, at intermediate stages, or upon delivery to the customer’s site. Although the manufacturer is entitled to use internal procedures for monitoring technological processes, final acceptance or rejection of products is carried out exclusively on the basis of instrumental measurements that comply with API 5B requirements.

Methods and tools for controlling threaded connections

Verification procedures include the use of precision instruments for a comprehensive assessment of the functional relationship of thread elements, as well as for measuring the parameters of individual threads. Standard inspection requirements cover:

  • Measurement of standoff and diametrical characteristics.
  • Control of ovality and taper of the profile.
  • Determination of thread pitch and flank angle accuracy.
  • Geometric parameters of profile height and the distance between the pitch line and the crest.

These requirements are relevant for threaded connections with a thread density of 11.5 threads per inch (0.45 threads per mm) or less. Certified ring and plug gauges are used to evaluate the functional dimensions of external and internal threads. Specific inspection procedures supplementing the API 5B standard are described in detail in the API 5B1 regulatory framework.
