Technical specifications and scope of ASTM A992 steel
The ASTM A992 standard regulates requirements for structural steel shapes used in the construction of building frames, bridge structures, and complex engineering projects. This steel grade is optimized to provide high structural integrity with minimal dead weight of the structure.
If additional tests or specific restrictions are required, these requirements must be clearly stated in the purchase order specification. When selecting a welding technology, the physical and chemical properties of the grade and the intended operating conditions of the finished assembly must be taken into account. Recommendations for weldability are provided in Annex X3 of the A6 / A6M specification.
The standard uses both SI units and the British system of measures (ksi). The values provided in different systems are independent and are not subject to mutual conversion or combination.
Regulatory framework and reference documents
The production and supply of EV Group China products are based on the following ASTM standards:
- A 6 / A 6M: Protocols for general requirements for the delivery of structural steel shapes, bars, and sheet piling.
- A 370: Methodology for mechanical testing of steel products.
- A 673 / A673M: Sampling procedure for impact testing.
- E 112: Standardized method for analyzing microstructure and determining grain size.
Production requirements and chemical composition
ASTM A992 steel must undergo a deoxidation process. The content of silicon (Si) must be at least 0.10% and aluminum (Al) at least 0.015%. Nitrogen control is limited to 0.015% in the presence of nitrogen-binding elements and 0.012% in their absence.
Chemical analysis is carried out by heat analysis:
| C | Si | Mn | P | S | Cr | Mo | Ni | V | Nb | Cu | Fe |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.23 | 0.4 | 0.3 – 1.6 | 0.035 | 0.045 | 0.35 | 0.15 | 0.45 | 0.15 | 0.05 | 0.6 | Remainder |
Additional restrictions:
- Total content of Nb + V < 0.15%.
- Mn / S ratio > 20.
- For sections up to 25 mm, Mn from 0.30% is allowed.
- Tin (Sn) content is strictly regulated and must be < 0.02%.
For rolled products thicker than 50 mm (2 inches), the carbon equivalent (CE) must not exceed 0.47%, and for other sizes — 0.45%. The calculation is performed using the formula: CE = C + (Mn)/6+(Cr + Mo + V)/5 + (Ni + Cu)/15.
Mechanical properties and strength standards
The material undergoes mandatory tensile testing to confirm compliance with EV Group China standards:
| Yield Strength, MPa | Tensile Strength, MPa | Elongation, % | Yield-to-Tensile Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| 345 – 460 | > 450 | > 18 | < 0.85 |
Additional options upon request
