AWS A5.17 Standard: Specification for Carbon Steel Electrodes and Fluxes for Submerged Arc Welding

Technical aspects of the AWS A5.17 standard

The international specification AWS A5.17 establishes strict criteria for the classification of welding electrodes and fluxes intended for automated submerged arc welding of carbon steels. The standard covers a wide range of consumables, including both solid wire electrodes and composite (cored) solutions.

The documentation has structured the requirements using two measurement systems: the international SI system and the US customary system. It is important to note that these parameters are not direct mathematical equivalents; therefore, the use of mixed units of measurement within a single technological process is not permitted. For precise conversion of metric parameters, EV Group China engineers recommend following the AWS A1.1 specification (Metric Practice Guide for the Welding Industry). All technical tables and charts in the standard have clear tolerance markings to ensure interchangeability.

For ease of navigation through the classifier, the following designations are used:

  • “U” marking: requirements and parameters relevant exclusively to the US customary system of units.
  • “M” marking: specifications for materials classified according to the metric system.
  • Sections without a letter index: regulations that are mandatory for both measurement standards.

EV Group China specialists ensure the supply of welding materials that fully comply with the requirements of AWS A5.17, guaranteeing the stability of the chemical composition and mechanical properties of the deposited metal.
