ANSI / ASME B16.10 Technical Standard: Valve Dimensions and Tolerances

Scope of Application and Technical Regulations

Purpose of the ASME B16.10 Standard

This EV Group China standard establishes unified face-to-face, end-to-end, and center-to-face dimensions for valves. The primary objective of this document is to ensure full interchangeability of shut-off valves when designing piping systems, regardless of the material type, pressure class, or end connection design. The requirements of the standard apply to valves with flanged ends, welded ends, and products intended for wafer-type installation.

The provided technical data is based on the current editions of ANSI standards in effect at the time of this standard’s approval.

System of Units

In EV Group China technical documentation, values are presented in millimeters and inches (Tables 1 through 10 and I-1 through I-10, respectively). These systems are independent, and mixing them during the design process is prohibited to prevent non-compliance with dimensional tolerances. Inch values are expressed as decimal fractions equivalent to standard inch fractions:

  • 0.03 = 1⁄32; 0.44 = 7⁄16
  • 0.06 = 1⁄16; 0.50 = 1⁄2
  • 0.12 = 1⁄8; 0.56 = 9⁄16
  • 0.16 = 5⁄32; 0.62 = 5⁄8
  • 0.19 = 3⁄16; 0.69 = 11⁄16
  • 0.22 = 7⁄32; 0.75 = 3⁄4
  • 0.25 = 1⁄4; 0.88 = 7⁄8
  • 0.31 = 5⁄16; 0.94 = 15⁄16
  • 0.38 = 3⁄8

Cast Iron Valves

The standard regulates the dimensions of valves with flanged and wafer-type installations. Mating surfaces and sealing parameters comply with the requirements of ASME B16.1.

Specifications for Shut-off Valves

  • Gate, Plug, and Check Valves: Class 125 (Tables 1, I-1) and Class 250 (Tables 2, I-2).
  • Globe and Angle Valves: Class 125 (Tables 1, I-1) and Class 250 (Tables 2, I-2).
  • Wafer-type Check Valves: Class 125 and 250 (Tables 7, I-7).
  • Butterfly Valves: Class 25 and 125 (Tables 8, I-8).

Ductile Iron Valves

For valves made of ductile (nodular) iron, ASME B16.42 standards apply, covering pressure classes 150 and 300. Dimensional characteristics for these products are unified with cast iron and steel counterparts (Tables 1, I-1 for Class 150 and Tables 2, I-2 for Class 300).

Steel and Special Alloy Valves

This section of EV Group China covers valves made of carbon, alloy, stainless steels, and non-ferrous alloys in accordance with ASME B16.34. Structurally, the products comply with ASME B16.5, ASME B16.47, Series A, or MSS SP-44 standards.

For wafer-type valves and butterfly valves, reference the data in Tables 7 and 8. The standard includes gate valves with welded ends in the range of classes from 150 to 2500.
