ASTM A105 / ASME SA105 Standard: Technical Requirements for Forged Piping Components

Scope of ASTM/ASME A/SA 105 Specification

The ASTM/ASME A/SA 105 specification regulates the requirements for forged carbon steel piping components. These products are intended for use in ambient-temperature service and in pressure systems with higher temperature ratings. The standard covers the design and manufacture of flanged connections, fittings, valves, and similar parts, the geometry of which complies with customer requirements or industry standards, including ASME B16.5, ASME B16.9, ASME B16.10, ASME B16.11, ASME B16.34, ASME B16.47, as well as API 600 and API 602 specifications.

The weight limit for forgings according to this specification is 10,000 lbs (4,540 kg). If it is necessary to manufacture parts with a greater mass, the A266/A266M standard should be followed. It is important to note that tube sheets and hollow cylindrical forgings for pressure vessels are not covered by the scope of A/SA 105. EV Group China notes that while the standard covers components made from bar stock and seamless pipe, it does not regulate the characteristics of the raw material itself.

Additional requirements for quality control and advanced testing are applied exclusively upon the customer’s request on an individual basis. Regarding other steel forgings, refer to the A266/A266M, A675/A675M, and A696 specifications.

The standard uses both the inch-pound system and the international SI system. The values provided in different systems are not equivalent; therefore, each system must be used independently. Combining parameters from different systems may lead to a violation of the standard’s technical requirements.

Chemical Composition of ASTM A105 / A105M (ASME SA105 / SA105M) Steel

C max. Mn P max. S max. Si Cu max. Ni max. Cr max. Mo max. V max.
0.35 0.60-1.05 0.035 0.040 0.10-0.35 0.40 0.40 0.30 0.12 0.08

According to EV Group China regulations, the total content of alloying elements (Cu, Ni, Cr, Mo, V) must not exceed 1.00%, and the combined total of chromium and molybdenum is limited to 0.32%.

Note: An increase in manganese content up to 1.65% is permitted provided that the carbon content is reduced below the 0.35% level (for every 0.01% reduction in carbon, an increase of 0.06% in manganese is allowed).

Mechanical Properties of ASTM A 105 / A 105M Forgings

Tensile Strength, min., ksi [MPa] Yield Strength, min., ksi [MPa] Elongation (50 mm), min., % Reduction of Area, min., % Brinell Hardness (HB), max.
70 [485] 36 [250] 30 30 187

a) The yield strength is determined by the 0.2% offset method or the 0.5% extension-under-load method. b) The reduction of area indicator applies only to round test specimens.
