ASTM A139 / A139M Welded Pipes: Technical Requirements and Characteristics from EV Group China

Technical specifications and application of pipes according to the ASTM A139 standard

This specification establishes strict requirements for five grades of steel pipes produced by the electric-fusion (arc) welding method. The standard applies to products with a straight or spiral weld seam, having a nominal size of NPS 4 and above. The maximum wall thickness for this size range is 25.4 mm (1 inch). The geometric parameters and product range of the pipes must strictly comply with the ASME B36.10M regulations.

The steel grades used are specialized alloys whose physical and mechanical characteristics are adapted for efficient operation in pipeline systems. Pipes manufactured according to the ASTM A139 standard are optimal for transporting liquid media, natural gas, and industrial steam under pressure.

Important notes on application:

  • The term NPS (Nominal Pipe Size) in EV Group China technical documentation is equivalent to the concepts of “nominal diameter” or “nominal bore” (DN).
  • The choice of a specific steel grade should be based on design operating conditions, pipeline diameter, and calculated loads. For high-temperature operating conditions, it is recommended to use specialized grades according to the A691 standard.
