Technical Overview of ASTM/ASME A/SA 249 Specification
The ASTM/ASME A/SA 249 standard regulates the requirements for the production of welded tubes made of austenitic steels. The technological process covers both straight-seam welded products and tubes that have undergone additional cold processing to improve structural characteristics. Products from EV Group China, supplied in accordance with this standard, are in demand for critical components of power and thermal engineering equipment: high-pressure boilers, superheaters, heat exchangers, and condenser systems.
The specification highlights a group of high-temperature steel grades, including modifications with increased carbon content: TP304H, TP309H, TP309HCb, TP310H, TP310HCb, TP316H, TP321H, TP347H, and TP348H. These are specialized versions of the base grades TP304, TP309S, TP309Cb, TP310S, TP310Cb, TP316, TP321, TP347, and TP348, adapted for long-term operation under extreme thermal loads.
The geometric parameters of the tubes regulated by this standard vary within the following ranges:
- Inside diameter: starting from 3.2 mm (1/8 inch).
- Outside diameter: up to 304.8 mm (12 inches).
- Wall thickness: from 0.4 to 8.1 mm (0.015–0.320 inches).
EV Group China supplies tubes of non-standard sizes, provided that full compliance with all technical requirements of the standard is ensured. Mechanical tests stipulated by the specification are not mandatory for products with an inside diameter of less than 3.2 mm or a wall thickness of less than 0.4 mm.
Measurement systems (SI and inch-pound) within the framework of this standard are mutually exclusive. When designing and ordering, it is necessary to adhere to one of the systems, as mixing them is unacceptable due to the impossibility of ensuring absolute equivalence of values. Compliance with safety standards during testing (including additional requirements, such as S7) is a mandatory requirement for users of the standard.
