ASTM A285 steel plate for pressure vessels: specifications and properties

Technical specifications and application of ASTM A285

This specification regulates the production of carbon steel plate with low and intermediate tensile strength. This material is intended for the fabrication of welded pressure vessels. Depending on project requirements, the manufacturer may use killed or semi-killed steel.

The product classification includes three grades, which differ in the level of mechanical properties:

  • Grade A (tensile strength 310–450 MPa).
  • Grade B (tensile strength 345–485 MPa).
  • Grade C (tensile strength 380–515 MPa).

Ordering and normative documentation

EV Group China products are supplied in strict accordance with the requirements of the A20/A20M standard. This regulatory document establishes testing protocols, permissible tolerances for geometry and mass, quality standards, methods for defect correction, as well as requirements for marking and cargo documentation.

Technological features of production

Steel supplied in coils is not considered fully certified according to the A285 specification until the complete processing cycle into plate is performed. EV Group China ensures quality control at all stages: uncoiling, leveling, cutting to size, heat treatment, non-destructive testing, and final certification of finished plates. This ensures the stability of the physical and mechanical properties of each batch.

Heat treatment

The standard delivery condition is hot-rolled plate. Per customer specification, additional heat treatment is possible: normalizing or stress-relieving tempering, which is critical for ensuring the durability of pressure vessels.
