Technical standards and scope of ASTM A29/A29M
The ASTM A29/A29M specification regulates a comprehensive set of general technical requirements for carbon and alloy steel bars. The provisions of this standard serve as the foundation for a wide range of metal products, unless otherwise specified in individual order specifications or specific industry standards. Specialists at EV Group China use this regulation as a basis for quality control of steel products that meet ASTM requirements.
Below is a list of key ASTM specifications governed by the general requirements of A29:
- Steel bars, carbon, quenched and tempered (according to A321).
- Steel bars and shapes, carbon rolled from “T” rails (according to A499).
- Steel bars, carbon, merchant quality (according to M-575).
- Steel bars, carbon, hot-wrought, special quality (according to A576).
In the event of a conflict between the requirements of individual specifications and the general provisions of this standard, priority is given to the requirements set forth in the individual order agreed upon with EV Group China.
The standard permits the use of both the inch-pound system and the SI metric system. It is important to note that these systems are not exact equivalents; therefore, engineering calculations must be based on a single selected system. Mixing parameters from different measurement systems is not permitted, as this may lead to deviations from regulatory quality indicators.
The methodology for assessing material compliance with specification requirements is based on the rounding method in accordance with regulation E 29.
Note: The ASTM A29/A29M specification also establishes tolerances for finished steel products that have undergone cold deformation, which is detailed in the A108 standard.
