ASTM A334 / ASME SA334 Specification: Seamless and Welded Pipes for Low-Temperature Service

Technical Regulation and Operational Characteristics of ASTM A334 / ASME SA334

The ASTM A334 standard (as well as its equivalent ASME SA334) establishes stringent requirements for seamless and welded carbon and alloy steel pipes designed for use in extremely low-temperature environments. The primary focus of the specification is to ensure material toughness, preventing brittle fracture under cryogenic conditions. Engineers at EV Group China note that for certain pipe sizes with critically large wall thicknesses, impact toughness may decrease, which limits their application under this standard.

Additional testing (requirement S1) is performed by EV Group China specialists exclusively upon the customer’s prior request to confirm compliance with specific project conditions.

Main Parameters and Tolerances

For pipes with an outside diameter of less than 1/2 inch (12.7 mm), elongation values are regulated for strip specimens as shown in Table 1 of the specification. It is important to note that the mechanical requirements of this standard do not apply to products with an outside diameter of less than 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) and pipes with a wall thickness that does not meet the established limit values (less than 0.015 inch / 0.4 mm).

When designing, it is important to remember the distinction between measurement systems: values in inch-pound units and SI units are independent standards. EV Group China recommends against converting or combining these systems to avoid deviations from project documentation and violations of safety requirements during pipeline operation in low-temperature conditions.
