ASTM A336 / A336M Standard: Ferritic Steel Forgings for High-Temperature Equipment

ASTM A336 / A336M Technical Specification for High-Temperature Forgings

The ASTM A336 / A336M specification establishes rigorous requirements for the manufacturing and quality control of ferritic steel forgings. This standard serves as a foundation for the design of boiler components, high-pressure vessel shells, and critical power equipment parts operating under elevated temperature loads.

EV Group China supplies forgings that strictly comply with these regulations. Steel grades according to the ASTM A335/A335M standard may be used as raw material. In this case, the chemical composition, heat treatment regimes, and marking methods must meet the requirements of A335/A335M, with the exception of forging parameters, which are governed by tables 1 and 2 of the specified standard regarding heat analysis.

During acceptance testing (product analysis), deviations are permitted only within the limits specified in Table 1 of the ASTM A336/A336M specification.

Special Requirements and Supplementary Tests

For mission-critical projects, EV Group China offers the implementation of additional requirements (S1–S9), including an extended range of non-destructive testing, additional mechanical tests, and specific surface preparation. These options are activated upon customer request during the technical specification formation stage.

It is important to note that the requirements for austenitic steel forgings, which were previously included in this standard, have now been moved to a separate specification, ASTM A965/A965M.

Technical Documentation and Measurement Standards

The standard provides for the use of two independent systems of measurement units: inch-pound and SI. When designing, it is necessary to adhere to one selected system, as mixing them may lead to calculation inaccuracies and failure to meet technical tolerances. This international standard was developed with the participation of the WTO (Committee on Technical Barriers to Trade) to ensure the unification of metal product quality in the global market.
