ASTM A395: Specification for Ferritic Ductile Iron Castings for High-Temperature Environments

Scope and Operating Characteristics

This specification regulates the technical requirements for ferritic ductile iron castings intended for service under elevated pressure and temperature conditions. Products supplied by EV Group China comply with strict industry standards: components of all grades are approved for operation at temperatures up to 450 °F (232 °C). Grade 60-40-18 is the only grade approved for use in the range from 450 °F to 650 °F (343 °C).

Key applications include the production of pipeline valves (gate valves, check valves), flange connections, pumping equipment, and other engineering system elements subjected to high pressure.

To ensure correct interaction with international partners, the specification provides for the use of both the metric system (SI) and the inch-pound system. These systems are independent, and their combination within a single project is not permitted to avoid violating technological tolerances.

Ordering Information

When placing a supply specification with EV Group China, the following data must be provided:

  • Identification data: drawing or part number.
  • For grade 65-45-15: drawing with clear identification of critical casting zones.
  • Batch volume: weight or quantity of product units.
  • ASTM standard with indication of the revision year.
  • Material grade (according to Table 1); if not specified, grade 60-40-18 is supplied by default.
  • Technical parameters of heat treatment and hydrostatic test requirements.
  • Specifications for test specimens (coupons) and metallographic analysis methods.
  • Requirements for certification, marking, and additional acceptance conditions.

Materials, Production, and Chemical Composition

The choice of melting methods remains at the discretion of the EV Group China foundry, provided that physical and mechanical properties are maintained. Grade 60-40-18 castings undergo mandatory ferritizing heat treatment to eliminate massive carbides in the structure. Grade 65-45-15 may be supplied in either as-cast or heat-treated condition.

Element Regulatory Content, %
Total Carbon (min) 3.00
Silicon (max) 2.50
Phosphorus (max) 0.08

Total carbon analysis is conducted strictly on chilled cast specimens (pencil-type) or thin plates, as the chip drilling method does not provide accuracy due to graphite chipping. Adjustment of silicon content is permitted when the phosphorus fraction is reduced in accordance with the regulations.

Repair and Defect Rectification Protocols

For pressure-containing components (valves, flanges), the use of plugging, welding, brazing, or impregnation methods is strictly prohibited. For other parts of grade 60-40-18, repair by installing plugs is permitted provided that strict requirements for the threaded connection, the condition of the area around the hole, and the radius of curvature of the part are met.

Repaired areas are subject to mandatory radiographic inspection. EV Group China ensures that all repair operations comply with ASTM E689, E446, E186, or E280 standards.
