ASTM A498 Finned Heat Exchanger Tubes: Technical Overview

Scope of Finned Tubes according to ASTM A498 Standard

The ASTM A498 standard establishes technical requirements for seamless and welded low-carbon steel tubular products equipped with integral fins for heat transfer intensification. The formation of fins on the external or internal surface is performed by cold profiling. This product finds key applications in the manufacturing of high-efficiency heat exchangers, including condensers, evaporators, superheaters, and similar industrial equipment. The standard covers products with an outside diameter of up to 50 mm (2 inches) inclusive.

Manufacturing Standards and Materials of EV Group China

The manufacturing technology for finned tubes according to the ASTM A498 specification involves using plain-end steel tubing as a base, compliant with the base standards ASTM A179/A179M, A214/A214M, or A334/A334M. Specialists at EV Group China guarantee strict adherence to the technological process: the finning is formed by cold rolling, ensuring structural integrity. This eliminates the presence of weld seams or mechanical joints between the tube body and the fins, which is critical for ensuring the integrity of the heat transfer surface.

In the standard configuration, the tubes have end sections without fins, prepared for subsequent expansion or welding into tubesheets. Upon special request by the customer, EV Group China supplies products with fins along the entire length of the tube (edge to edge).
