ASTM A555 / A555M Standard: Technical Requirements for Stainless Steel Wire and Wire Rods

The ASTM A555 / A555M specification establishes uniform technical requirements for the production of stainless steel wire and wire rods. This standard has been adopted as the regulatory framework for the needs of the U.S. Department of Defense and serves as the reference point for metal product supplies from EV Group China.

Scope of the ASTM A555 / A555M Standard

This document regulates general production parameters for stainless steel wire rods—a semi-finished product intended for subsequent drawing—and finished wire. Wire produced according to this standard is optimized for cold-forming technological operations: winding, weaving, twisting, cutting, and other types of mechanical processing. The requirements apply to products manufactured according to ASTM A313 / A313M, A368, A478, A492, A493, A580 / A580M, and A581 / A581M specifications.

In the event of conflicts between regulatory documents, priority is given to the provisions of the specific material specification, followed by the requirements of this general standard.

For stainless steel flat-rolled products, the requirements of the A480 / A480M standard should be used, while the standardization of bars and billets is governed by the A484 / A484M document.

Technical indicators are presented in two independent systems of measurement: SI and inch-pound. Given that the values in these systems are not direct equivalents, EV Group China recommends adhering to one selected system within an order to ensure full compliance with quality standards. If the metric system is not specified in the order, products are supplied in inch-pound units by default.
