ASTM A572 / ASME SA 572M Steel: Specifications and Applications from EV Group China

Technical features of ASTM A572 / ASME SA 572M steel

The ASTM/ASME A/SA 572M standard regulates the production of high-strength low-alloy steel, including plate, sheet piling, and structural shapes. The EV Group China portfolio includes all five strength grades compliant with this standard.

Classification by yield strength (MPa):

  • Grades 42 [290], 50 [345], and 55 [380]: optimal for critical structures involving bolted, riveted, or welded connections.
  • Grades 60 [415] and 65 [450]: recommended for bridge construction (bolted/riveted connections) and general structural steelwork.

For projects requiring enhanced notch toughness in welded bridge structures, EV Group China engineers perform preliminary coordination of additional testing requirements. It is important to note that substituting A588 steel with A572 requires a mandatory technical audit and approval from the supplier.

Chemical composition and alloying

According to the standard, strength is achieved through micro-alloying with niobium (columbium), vanadium, titanium, or nitrogen. The choice of a specific combination of alloying elements (types 1, 2, 3, or 5) is determined by the EV Group China production protocol, unless the customer has specified particular requirements under S90.

Welding and operating recommendations

When selecting welding technology, it is necessary to consider the specific steel grade and subsequent operating conditions. It is recommended to refer to the weldability guide in Appendix X3 of the A6/A6M specification. EV Group China specialists provide full technical support for material selection for complex engineering tasks.

When working with documentation, please note: values in SI units and inch-pound units are independent standards and are not subject to mutual conversion. For products manufactured from coiled steel without subsequent heat treatment, additional testing protocols according to A6/A6M apply.
