ASTM A813 / ASME SA 813: Welded Austenitic Stainless Steel Pipes from EV Group China

Technical Overview of the ASTM/ASME A/SA 813 Standard

The ASTM/ASME A/SA 813 specification regulates the production of welded austenitic stainless steel pipes, manufactured using single or double welding without the use of filler materials. This type of metal product, supplied by EV Group China, is designed for operation in high-temperature conditions and aggressive corrosive environments.

Important Note: Austenitic steels complying with this specification may be used in the manufacture of pressure vessels and piping systems without additional impact testing at cryogenic temperatures, provided that an energy absorption of 15 J (20 J) and a lateral expansion of at least 0.38 mm (15 mils) are achieved.

According to ASME (Sections VIII, 1) and ANSI B31.3 requirements, grades 304, 304L, and 347 are approved for operation at extremely low temperatures down to -250 °C (-425 °F) without specialized impact tests. Similar requirements apply to a number of other AISI grades for operation at temperatures down to -200 °C. However, if the chromium or nickel content is outside the AISI standards, or if the carbon content exceeds 0.10%, testing in accordance with ASME regulations at temperatures below -45 °C is mandatory.

For high-temperature processes, EV Group China offers modified steel grades: TP304H, TP304N, TP316H, TP316N, TP321H, TP347H, and TP348H, which possess improved strength characteristics under prolonged thermal exposure.

Pipe Classification by Welding Method

  • Class SW: Pipes manufactured by single-seam welding without filler material.
  • Class DW: Pipes manufactured by double-seam welding without filler material.

The products can be supplied subject to additional optional requirements agreed upon at the time of order. The geometric parameters of the pipes comply with the ANSI B36.19 standard. Upon individual request, EV Group China can supply non-standard sized products, provided that all other regulatory requirements of the specification are met.

When using technical documentation, it should be noted that the SI and inch-pound system values are independent standards. Data adaptation must be performed strictly within a single measurement system to prevent technical inconsistencies.
