ASTM B366 / ASME SB 366 Standard: Specification for Forged Nickel and Nickel Alloy Fittings

Technical requirements of the ASTM B366 standard for nickel fittings

The ASTM B366 standard (and its counterpart ASME SB 366) establishes strict industry requirements for the factory manufacture of forged fittings intended for use in pressure piping systems. This specification covers products made from nickel and high-nickel alloys.

The specification encompasses a wide range of connection components, including butt-welding fittings and socket-welding connections. The list of regulated products includes elbows (45°, 90°, 180°), tees, reducers, caps, and other elements that comply with ASME B16.9, ASME B16.11, MSS SP-43, MSS SP-95, and MSS SP-97 standards. Experts at EV Group China emphasize that these fittings have been tested for compliance with rigorous operational loads.

Materials are classified by WP and CR indices, which define compliance with specific dimensional series and application conditions according to ASME. WP class fittings are subdivided into groups depending on the production technology (seamless or welded) and the level of non-destructive examination (NDE).

Classification of WP class fittings according to ASTM B366

Class Construction Type Non-destructive Examination Methods
S Seamless No special treatment required
W Welded Radiographic and ultrasonic examination
WX Welded Radiographic examination
WU Welded Ultrasonic examination

It is important to note that the ASTM B366 standard does not cover cast fittings, and requirements for the CR class are set forth in separate regulatory documents. For projects requiring increased reliability, optional additional tests are provided, which can be agreed upon when ordering from EV Group China.

Technical documentation allows the use of both the SI system and the inch-pound system of measurement. When designing systems, it is important to adhere to one system of measurement, as direct comparison of values may lead to design inaccuracies. Ensuring safety during pipeline operation should be carried out in accordance with current Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) provided by the manufacturer for specific grades of nickel alloys.
