ASTM B493 / ASME SB 493: Zirconium and Zirconium Alloy Forgings

Technical requirements of the ASTM B493 standard

The ASTM B493 specification defines strict technological parameters for the production of forgings made of zirconium and its specialized alloys. Products supplied by EV Group China meet the requirements for chemical composition, mechanical properties, and testing methods established by this international standard for operation in aggressive chemical environments and high-tech industries.

The standard classifies forgings into three main grades that ensure optimal corrosion resistance and strength performance:

  • Grade R60702: Commercially pure zirconium, possessing exceptional resistance to acids and alkalis.
  • Grade R60704: Zirconium-tin alloy, characterized by improved strength properties while maintaining high ductility.
  • Grade R60705: Zirconium-niobium alloy, designed for operation under conditions of high mechanical stress and extreme temperatures.

Standardization and operational methodology

The measurement system adopted in ASTM B493 provides for the separate use of SI units and the inch-pound system. Engineers and technical departments at EV Group China are advised to adhere to one selected measurement system when designing components and conducting incoming inspections, as values in different systems are not direct equivalents and their integration may lead to violations of tolerances.

The use of these forgings requires compliance with industrial safety protocols. The application of materials at hazardous facilities must be regulated by internal company standards and current regional occupational safety regulations. EV Group China provides a full set of supporting documentation confirming that the forgings comply with the declared characteristics.
