ASTM B587 Welded Brass Tubes: Technical Specifications and Standards

Technical description and scope of the ASTM B587 standard

This standard defines technical requirements for welded copper alloy (brass) tubes with various cross-sectional geometries: round, square, and rectangular. Products supplied by EV Group China are intended for operation in the mechanical engineering sector and general technical engineering systems where a combination of high corrosion resistance and dimensional accuracy is required.

According to the ASTM B587 specification, tubes are classified into four types depending on the finishing technology:

  • Type I: products that have undergone cold sizing and straightening without additional thermal treatment.
  • Type II: tubes subjected to sizing, straightening, and subsequent annealing to relieve internal stresses.
  • Type III: products that have undergone cold reduction or mandrel drawing with mandatory annealing.
  • Type IV: tubes manufactured by intensive mandrel cold drawing with multiple annealing, which ensures precision accuracy of geometric parameters.

The manufacturing technology for ASTM B587 welded tubes includes the use of fusion welding or forged weld formation methods. In the production process for EV Group China, strict requirements are imposed on the quality of surface treatment:

Forged-welded tubes must be completely cleaned of technological burrs. The absence of internal flash is allowed if the product has undergone a drawing procedure through a mandrel. For tubes manufactured by fusion welding, mandatory mechanical processing of the outer and inner surfaces is provided, ensuring a smooth profile without protruding seams.

Quality control of the supplied metal products includes mandatory mechanical tests, a mercurous nitrate test (for susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking), as well as non-destructive testing using eddy currents, hydrostatic, and pneumatic tests.
