ASTM B829 (ASME SB 829) Standard: General Requirements for Seamless Nickel Pipes

Technical Requirements of the ASTM B829 (ASME SB 829) Standard

The ASTM B829 specification establishes unified requirements for the production and quality control of seamless pipes and tubes based on nickel and nickel alloys. The provisions of this standard serve as a foundation for a wide range of industry specifications, with the exception of certain clauses (Sections 5 and 10), which are advisory or clarifying in nature depending on the specific product.

The ASTM B829 standard is integrated with a number of specialized specifications that regulate the supply of metal products for critical engineering systems:

  • ASTM B161: seamless nickel pipes.
  • ASTM B163: seamless nickel and nickel alloy condenser and heat-exchanger tubes.
  • ASTM B165: nickel-copper alloy seamless pipes and tubes.
  • ASTM B167: nickel-chromium-iron alloys seamless pipes and tubes.
  • ASTM B407: nickel-iron-chromium alloy seamless pipes and tubes.
  • ASTM B423: nickel-iron-chromium-molybdenum-copper alloy (UNS N08825 and N08221) seamless pipes and tubes.
  • ASTM B444: nickel-chromium-molybdenum-columbium alloys seamless pipes and tubes.
  • ASTM B445: nickel-chromium-iron-columbium-molybdenum-tungsten alloy seamless pipes and tubes.
  • ASTM B535: nickel-iron-chromium-silicon alloys (UNS N08330 and N08332) seamless pipes and tubes.
  • ASTM B570: copper-beryllium alloy seamless pipes and tubes.
  • ASTM B622: seamless nickel and nickel-cobalt alloy pipes and tubes.
  • ASTM B668: UNS N08028 seamless pipes and tubes.
  • ASTM B677: UNS N08904, N08925, and N08926 seamless pipes and tubes.
  • ASTM B690: iron-nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloys (UNS N08366 and N08367) seamless pipes and tubes.
  • ASTM B722: UNS N06333 seamless pipes and tubes.
  • ASTM B729: seamless UNS N08020, N08026, and N08024 nickel-alloy pipes and tubes.

A key principle of applying ASTM B829 is the priority of the specific product specification over the general one: in case of conflicting requirements, the regulations for the specific type of product take precedence. A number of tests specified in Section 5 are optional and are performed only when required by the purchase order.

Technical parameters in the standard are provided in the inch-pound system, which is the primary system. SI values are provided for reference to facilitate international calculations.

Specialists at EV Group China emphasize that compliance with safety protocols during Section 5 testing is a mandatory condition for ensuring the quality of supplied metal products.
