EN 10264 Standard: Technical Regulation for Steel Wire for Ropes

The European standard EN 10264 sets strict requirements for steel wire used in the production of critical rope products. Experts at EV Group China have prepared an overview of the key provisions of this regulatory document.

EN 10264-1: General Requirements

The first part of the EN 10264 standard defines the fundamental criteria for wire intended for the manufacture of mechanical steel ropes. Specifications for specific product types are detailed in subsequent parts of the standard. The document focuses primarily on the unification of quality parameters:

  • Geometric dimension tolerances and cross-sectional accuracy.
  • Mechanical indicators of strength and ductility.
  • Chemical composition of the raw material.
  • Regulations for applying protective coatings to ensure corrosion resistance.

EN 10264-2: Cold-Drawn Non-Alloy Wire for General Purposes

This part covers technical conditions for non-alloy steel wire that has undergone the cold-drawing process. Products complying with this standard are used in the production of general-purpose ropes and lifting mechanisms for which no specialized industry standards are provided. EV Group China emphasizes that the regulation does not apply to wire extracted from ropes already in service.

Key Control Parameters:

  • Dimensional accuracy characteristics.
  • Dynamic and static mechanical properties.
  • Requirements for the chemical composition of the steel.
  • Technological conditions for anti-corrosion treatment.

EN 10264-3: Wire for Heavy-Duty Applications

This section regulates the production of round and shaped non-alloy steel wire for ropes operating under high dynamic loads. This is critical equipment for mine hoists, passenger ropeways, and high-load industrial systems. The standard covers round wire and three types of profile wire: Z-shaped (full lock), H-shaped (half lock), and T-shaped (trapezoidal).

EN 10264-4: Stainless Steel Wire

The final part of the EN 10264 standard focuses on wire made from stainless alloys. It is intended for the manufacture of ropes operating in aggressive corrosive environments and under moderate temperature conditions. The use of stainless steel ensures a long service life for products in the marine or chemical industries, strictly adhering to the mechanical and chemical parameters stated in the standard.
