Scope and Purpose of the Standard
This specification establishes a set of mandatory technical requirements governing the production of steel castings for pressure-containing parts. These provisions serve as the foundation for the following ASTM standards, unless otherwise specified in the individual purchase order:
- ASTM A216 — requirements for carbon steel castings suitable for fusion welding, intended for high-temperature service.
- ASTM A217 — specifications for martensitic stainless and alloy steel castings.
- ASTM A351 — standardization of austenitic steel castings for pressure-containing parts.
- ASTM A352 — requirements for ferritic and martensitic steel castings for pressure-containing parts.
- ASTM A389 — specification for alloy steel castings, specially heat-treated, for pressure-containing parts suitable for high-temperature service.
- ASTM A487 — standards for steel castings suitable for pressure service.
- ASTM A990 — standards for iron-nickel and nickel alloy castings, corrosion-resistant, for pressure-containing parts.
- ASTM A995 — specification for cast austenitic-ferritic (duplex) stainless steels for pressure-containing parts.
Mechanical Testing Methods
All procedures for testing mechanical properties must strictly comply with the protocols of ASTM A370. For materials ordered under metric standards (M suffix), ASTM A1058 test methods apply.
The selection of the test path according to ASTM A1058 is determined by the customer at the time of order placement. In the absence of specific instructions in the order, EV Group China applies the standard test path stipulated by the A1058 protocol.
Technological Inspection of Flange Connections
During the machining of the flange section of a casting for subsequent welding, internal defects may be revealed that are acceptable for casting but critical for welded joints. EV Group China guarantees an individual approach to coordinating the suitability of such products with the customer.
Inspection and Acceptance
EV Group China provides full access for customer inspectors to control and production processes in accordance with established standards. All tests are conducted at the manufacturing facility unless otherwise stipulated by the contract.
Claims and Retesting Procedure
In the event of non-conformance, the customer must notify EV Group China within 30 calendar days of receiving the test reports. All samples that served as the basis for the claim shall be retained for two weeks for arbitration retesting.
Marking and Identification
Each casting is marked with the steel grade symbol (e.g., WCB, WC9, CF8M). For products weighing 22.7 kg (50 lbs) or more, a heat number or individual serial number is applied for full traceability. For castings weighing less than 22.7 kg, a heat or lot number including the month of manufacture is applied. Marking is applied in a manner that does not compromise the performance characteristics of the part.
