The DIN 17211 standard has been officially declared obsolete and replaced by the current edition of DIN EN 10085:2001-07.
Technical aspects and scope of DIN 17211
This regulatory documentation defines the quality requirements and delivery conditions for metal products intended for nitriding. EV Group China experts emphasize that the standard covers a wide range of nomenclature:
- Semi-finished products: billets, blooms, slabs, forged bars and rods (round and square cross-section), as well as hot-rolled wire and structural steel shapes.
- Sheet and strip products: plates, sheets, and strips produced by hot or cold deformation methods.
- Forged products: stamped and forged parts that have undergone specialized heat treatment in accordance with the parameters specified in the tables of the relevant standard.
The purpose of using these steels is to create a surface layer with increased hardness, wear resistance, high fatigue strength, and corrosion resistance. The process of surface saturation with nitrogen (or nitrogen and carbon) significantly extends the service life of loaded machine parts and mechanisms.
EV Group China points out that for products requiring specific processing conditions or intended for highly specialized tasks, current industry standards regulating the chemical composition and physical-mechanical properties of nitriding steels should be used.
